Bumrungrad Hospital - the hospital that started it all
Thailand's reputation as the number one country in the world of medical tourism is strongly connected to the Bumrungrad International hospital. The Bumrungrad was not only the first hospital in Asia which got accredited by the Joint Commission International, it was also the hospital that pioneered the 5-star concept: it began the trend to combine first class medical services with 5-star luxury hotel convenience and service levels. The Bumrungrad hospital alone treats more foreign patients per year than all the hospitals of India combined: 400,000 in 2006.
Today a number of hospitals can compete with the Bumrungrad
While the Bumrungrad hospital played a real pioneering role, today a number of hospitals in Thailand offer similar service levels. Namely the Dusit Group of Hospitals with brands like the Bangkok Hospital, the Samitivej Hospital and the Bangkok Nursing Home or BNH, has become a great competitor and is now, as a group, bigger than the Bumrungrad. All of these places, and many others which you can find on this site, employ armies of foreign trained doctors fluent in a number of Western languages. Depending on the special services you are looking for, the best hospital might be one less famous than the Bumrungrad. Some of the smaller hospitals also offer lower prices for comparable service levels - the choice is yours, shop around.
Quality over price
In the early days, Thailand was attractive as a medical tourism destination, because the very best hospitals here offered much lower prices than second rate facilities in the West. Today even medical doctors from abroad fly to Thailand for surgery. Why? Well, the price advantage is still there, but now it is the world class doctors, the best-in-class technology the big hospitals can offer thanks to their great patient numbers and the short waiting lists which brings patients to Bangkok. More and more fly to Thailand for treatment, even though they have full medical insurance back home. Why? The service is so convincing that especially busy professionals can no longer be bothered to deal with the outdated and inconvenient health care system in their home countries. Flexibility has never been more rewarding.
