'Plastic Surgery' or 'Cosmetic Surgery'?
The expression 'plastic surgey' covers on this website 'cosmetic surgery' as well as 'reconstructive surgery'. Cosmetic surgery is a form of personal enhancement and hugely popular. Alone in the US more than 10 million procedures are performed annualy. Many of these procedures are highly standardized and offer themseves to medical tourism. Reconstructive surgery on the other side depends more on the often unique circumstances of the patient involved and is less often treated abroad.
Exceptions are breast reconstruction surgery for women who have had a mastectomy and sex reassignment surgery for transsexual people. These are both standard procedures and especially for sex reassignment surgery Thailand has become a world hub. For this and its unique nature with specialiced facilities, sex reassignment surgery is treated in a special section (see navigation bar on the left).
