Canada’s health-care system failure and air-traffic control

In the print edition of the Economist of July 15th, 2006 there is an interesting little article about the state of affairs in Canada. Stephen Harper, the prime minister, it says, can justifiably boast that four of his five campaign priorities had been met.

You guessed it, the fifth one is about speedy access to public health care. The article discusses all sorts of fixes, the more innovative of which were to increase the number of doctors who use computer records (currently only 14% do - incredible!) and then… here it comes… “using queuing theories used by air-traffic controllers and amusement parks”. I like outside-the-box solutions but this one, well, let’s just say medical tourism will continue to enjoy healthy growth rates in the years to come.
