Political Tension mounting in Bangkok but there is hope for a peaceful settlement
The tension can be felt, rumors are spreading. It feels like the city is preparing itself for the final battle. Office workers leave the work early, companies are busy preparing emergency plans. After this weekend there will be a different scenario, no more standstill which dominated Bangkok during the last six weeks.

Dentist Prices in Thailand

Some examples

Our experience in Thailand has been that if I just go for consultation and there is no actual treatment performed, we usually pay more for the taxi than for the clinic. We have seen many specialists and the consultation was always been less than 20 Euro, even in cases where one specialist called others to help with the assessment.

Many of the websites listed in the Bangkok's top clinics section have prices listed and usually offer specials for elective surgery. Personally, I am covered by health insurance in Australia, but found paying the full Thai rate cheaper than the 'uncovered' part in Sydney.

Some examples from 2006 (47 Thai Baht = 1 Euro):

  • deep cleaning by a periodontist, 29 Euro
  • root canal b y an endodontist, 55 Euro
  • 2 hour bone grafting surgery, 314 Euro (of which 191 Euro were for the imported bone graft material)

More examples from others:

  • laser tooth whitening, 230 Euro
  • tooth extraction, 20 Euro
  • dental implant from Nobel or Strauman, 1400 Euro
  • raisin filling in tooth color, 15 Euro
  • porcelain crown, 200 Euro
  • full mouth panoramic x-ray, 12 Euro
  • porcelain veneers, 210 Euro
  • composite veneers, 100 Euro
  • Top class Empress II, Procera or Cercon Crown, 300 Euro

All of the above prices include fees for assistants, x-rays, etc. The price for intraoral x-rays on a recent bill was 1.34 Euro for the equipment and 1.66 for the professional service, or 3.00 Euro in total.

Ask first and compare

For a simple procedure like the replacement of a filling or a regular cleaning don't worry too much about the costs. They will most likely be much lower than what you are used to. On the other hand if you choose to have major work done, it's better to ask first and possibly compare before you give the go-ahead.

Ask for a total cost estimate if your facility doesn't offer packages. Ask how many different specialists the whole dental procedure will involve. And how many visits, how long apart (check also known problems with dental treamtment in Thailand). Do this especially if you don't live in Bangkok or you have frequent traveling obligations.

Feedback

We would appreciate some more real live examples (as opposed to internet advertising) of medical bills from dental clinics in Thailand, which we will then make available in the dentist in Thailand feedback section. If you can't read the bill, a scanned image will do. We will find somebody to translate it for us. Let us know which part of the information you don't mind to become public.
